Peter Tatchell is one of the most enduring and fearless figures in the global struggle for equality and human rights. Known for his radical approach to activism and his unshakeable commitment to LGBTQ+ rights, Peter has inspired generations through more than five decades of relentless campaigning. From leading Britain’s first Pride march in 1972 to founding the Peter Tatchell Foundation, his work has consistently challenged the status quo and highlighted injustices across the globe. His voice has become synonymous with civil courage, non-violent protest, and principled resistance to authoritarianism and discrimination in all forms.
Peter’s activist journey began in Australia, where, as a teenager, he protested the Vietnam War and campaigned against the death penalty. After moving to London in 1971 to avoid military conscription, he immersed himself in the newly formed Gay Liberation Front, becoming one of its most visible members. In the 1980s, Peter’s selection as a Labour Party candidate for Bermondsey became one of the most controversial episodes in British political history, marked by a campaign widely condemned for its homophobia. Although he lost the election, the experience galvanised his resolve to pursue activism outside Parliament. In 1990, Peter co-founded OutRage!, a bold and uncompromising direct-action group that brought attention to institutional homophobia and helped dismantle anti-gay legislation, including Section 28.
Peter’s advocacy has always extended beyond British borders. He has protested against tyranny in Zimbabwe, Russia, and the Middle East, often putting himself at personal risk. In 1999 and 2001, he attempted citizen’s arrests of Robert Mugabe, suffering serious injury during the second attempt in Brussels. His campaigning against homophobic violence in Jamaica and for Palestinian and Kurdish rights reflects a deeply held belief in global solidarity. Over the years, Peter has been arrested more than 300 times, assaulted, and subjected to vilification – yet he remains steadfast. His activism has earned him significant accolades, including the Gandhi International Peace Award, Observer Ethical Award, and inclusion in the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘History Makers’ collection.
Today, through the Peter Tatchell Foundation, Peter continues to educate and advocate for human rights, speaking at schools, universities, public institutions, and private organisations across the UK and beyond. His speeches are passionate, informed, and rooted in lived experience, covering themes such as intersectionality, free speech, secularism, and international justice. Whether delivering a keynote at a diversity conference or consulting on inclusive policy, Peter offers a unique perspective shaped by half a century on the frontline of social change.
“Peter gave a thoughtful and highly engaging personal interview on the topic of international human rights attended by around 60 people from across the firm and the legal sector. I think people were surprised at the extent of his work on international issues. I’d encourage other organisations with a passion for diversity and inclusivity to hear what the Peter Tatchell Foundation has to say.”
“Chigwell School was lucky enough to hear a speaker from the Peter Tatchell Foundation. They outlined threats to human rights posed by organised religion; particularly to women and LGBT people. Speaking clearly and with passion, they demonstrated a powerful command of facts and arguments. The students were clearly fascinated by what the Peter Tatchell Foundation had to say. Informal exit surveys were very positive.”
“We have welcomed many guest speakers to The Bishop’s Stortford High School, as part of the Citizenship and Ethics education of our students. Peter Tatchell from the Peter Tatchell Foundation has been second to none in his contributions to this programme. His willingness to make time for the students has been much appreciated and highly regarded.
The lucid, clear and organised seminars given by the Peter Tatchell Foundation have struck that fine educational balance between rigor, engagement, challenge, participation and interaction. Never were standards compromised, never were students patronised and never were students anything but engaged and motivated. Delivery was a masterclass of eloquence. However, sessions were always discussions and never lectures….on a range of human rights subjects.”
