Julie Miller is a dynamic and unapologetically bold keynote speaker on Diversity and Inclusion, celebrated for her trailblazing work in transgender awareness. A former British Army officer who served for over 25 years, Julie brings a powerful mix of discipline, insight and lived experience to the stage. As a proud trans woman and passionate advocate, she confronts bias head-on with sharp intellect, compassion and a distinctive flair for performance. Her presentations, which combine academic rigour with humour and emotional storytelling, challenge audiences to rethink assumptions about gender identity and mental health and leave them questioning who the real “lunatic” in the asylum truly is.
Before dedicating her life to advocacy, Julie held a distinguished career in the British Army, retiring at the rank of Major. Her leadership skills were honed through prestigious military training at both the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the Army Staff College. Alongside her military service, she built a career as a professional engineer, holding BSc and MSc degrees and achieving Chartered Engineer status. Her engineering background, with its emphasis on precision and analysis, now underpins her methodical approach to dismantling prejudice and misinformation around transgender lives.
Since 2018, Julie has become one of the UK’s most respected voices on transgender awareness. As the Dorset Manager for the charity Beyond Reflections, she founded and facilitated the Bournemouth support group for trans individuals navigating transition. Her work has extended into consultancy roles with organisations including Make UK – The Manufacturers’ Organisation, as well as acting as a transgender governor for Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust. She has also provided critical input to the Crown Prosecution Service on hate crime procedures and worked within prison systems, facilitating support groups in challenging, high-security environments. Her work is both pioneering and deeply courageous, engaging spaces where trans representation is minimal or non-existent.
Julie’s speaking style is unlike any other. Her flagship talk, “A Bluffer’s Guide to Transgender,” is a vibrant mix of factual analysis, cultural critique and theatrical delivery. Drawing from up-to-date academic research, she explores the science, history, culture and law that uphold the existence and dignity of trans people. Her carefully structured presentations often break the mould, featuring a ‘Grand Opening Statement’, ‘Impassioned Speech’, and ‘Emotional Outburst’ – all designed to engage, entertain and enlighten. Julie’s mission is clear: to promote mental wellness, challenge transphobia, and humanise the trans experience with courage, empathy and undeniable charisma.
