Briana Scurry is an inspirational force in Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, celebrated not only for her excellence on the football pitch but also for her trailblazing role as a barrier-breaking athlete and advocate. As one of the first openly gay and African-American women to represent the United States on the world stage in professional football, Briana has redefined what it means to be a leader, a competitor, and a change-maker. Her lived experience of navigating predominantly white, male-dominated environments has positioned her as a powerful voice for underrepresented communities across sport, business, and society.

Briana’s football career is one of historic significance. She earned 173 international caps with the US Women’s National Team (USWNT), the second-most of any female goalkeeper, and played a pivotal role in some of the most iconic moments in US football history. She was the starting goalkeeper for the 1996 and 2004 Olympic gold medal-winning teams, and memorably saved a penalty in the shootout that secured the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup title. Off the pitch, she helped shape the professionalisation of women’s football as a founding player in the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA), where she was named Goalkeeper of the Year in 2003 with the Atlanta Beat.

Her contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including induction into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2017, making her the first Black woman goalkeeper to receive the honour. Briana’s legacy is permanently enshrined in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture, where her jersey is displayed as a symbol of excellence and inclusion. Following a career-ending traumatic brain injury in 2010, Briana became a powerful advocate for concussion awareness and mental health, courageously sharing her experience with depression and recovery. She has testified before the US Congress and now speaks widely on athlete wellbeing, inclusive leadership and resilience.

Today, Briana is a bestselling author of the memoir ‘My Greatest Save’ and the subject of the 2022 CBS documentary ‘The Only’. As a keynote speaker, she delivers honest, empowering messages that resonate across industries, drawing on her lived identity as a Black, LGBTQ+ woman in elite sport. Her signature talk, Success is Not a Straight Line, challenges audiences to embrace difference, overcome adversity, and lead with empathy. Briana’s story continues to inspire organisations worldwide to foster equity, belonging and human potential.
