Speaking Up: My Autobiography

Kelly Brown has led a successful career as a Rugby Union Player, having played for the likes of the Saracens, Border Reivers and Glasgow Warriors. Having since retired from the sport, Kelly now dedicates his time to coaching for former teams, and is also booked as a speaker for a range of sporting or corporate events. Having suffered from a stammer throughout his life, Kelly is booked for diversity and inclusion events to share his story of being neurodiverse and how he has learned to live with and overcome his stammer.

A talented Rugby player, Kelly began his career as a club player for Border Reivers, playing with them up until the end of the 2006-07 season. After the team made the decision to disband, Kelly joined Glasgow Warriors before signing for Saracens in 2010. Upon his retirement, Kelly had been capped 163 times for the Saracens and scored 95 points. He was also scouted to join the Scottish National Rugby Team, finishing his playing career capped 64 times and scoring 20 points. During his 64 games for the Scottish National Team, Kelly was also selected to act as the Scotland National Team Captain on 14 occasions.

After retiring from playing Rugby, Kelly moved into coaching and has since been a coach at the Saracens Academy and Glasgow Warriors. Throughout his career, Kelly has tackled a stammer, having attended the McGuire Programme as a treatment for his stammer. Today he is often seen speaking about how he dealt with having a stammer in top-flight rugby, inspiring others to overcome the psychological aspects of having a stammer. Throughout his career and life, Kelly has learnt what it takes to be mentally resilient, build self-confidence, empower and inspire others.

With a successful career to his name, Kelly is now booked as a speaker for a range of corporate or sporting events not only to share the success of his career but his life with a stammer. A true example of overcoming obstacles, maintaining mental resilience and tackling adversity, Kelly is the perfect addition to diversity and inclusion themed events. Having been described as ‘amusing, intelligent, emotional and insightful’, it is without a doubt that Kelly will move audiences of all kinds and inspire them to overcome their own personal challenges.
