An iconic boxing promoter, Kellie Maloney made headlines when she underwent gender reassignment surgery in 2014. Formerly known as Frank, Kellie led a number of high-profile boxers to world titles and has since become one of the most popular diversity and inclusion speakers in the country. Kellie’s journey from one of the most male-dominated industries to her transition was not seamless. Kellie’s 30-year career as a boxing promoter saw her manage Lennox Lewis as he became Heavyweight Champion of the World. As well as this she worked with David Haye, Darren Sutherland and Rendall Munroe. In her prime Kellie was regarded as the best in the business and named ‘Boxing Promoter of the Year’ in 2009. Despite her sporting prowess perhaps Kellie’s biggest success came in 2014 when she publicly announced she was a trans woman. Having battled with her identity for years she made the brave decision to tell the world and undergo gender reassignment surgery. Her heart-wrenching story has even become the feature of the 2020 documentary on Amazon Prime: From Frank to Kellie. During her diversity and inclusion speaking events, Kellie is a huge advocate for the LGBT+ community and can explain the prejudices and stigma as well as positive reactions she’s received since her transition.
In the early 1980s Kellie, then known as Frank, was a prominent figure on the British boxing scene. After working with a number of big-name boxers, Kellie became Lennox Lewis’ manager in 1989 a move that would see the pair forge a long-lasting relationship.
Now, Kellie is helping to grow the profile of women’s boxing managing a number of up-and-coming fighters. Having recognised the need for greater inclusion of women in the sport, Kellie has committed to using her decades of experience to champion greater gender diversity. She’s also well-known as a popular TV personality who appeared on Celebrity Big Brother and Celebrity MasterChef.
