Denise Leigh, an acclaimed opera singer, has carved a distinguished career in the music industry, marked by remarkable performances and personal resilience. Originally a brass player, Denise’s journey into opera began with the Sainsbury’s Gatsby Trust Award, allowing her to study at the Royal Northern College of Music, where she still collaborates with Clare Hogan. Her breakthrough came when she won the English National Opera’s “Operatunity” competition, which led to her unforgettable portrayal of Gilda in “Rigoletto” at the London Coliseum, shared with co-winner Jane Gilchrist.

Denise’s versatile talent has seen her performing at prestigious events and venues, including the BBC Proms in the Park, Songs of Praise, and Classic FM Live at the Royal Albert Hall. She has been a consistent presence at the Battle Proms Picnic Concerts and has toured extensively with concerts like “A Night at the Opera.” A highlight of her career was performing Errollyn Wallen’s “Spirit in Motion” at the 2012 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony, demonstrating her commitment to both musical excellence and meaningful causes.

Despite facing significant personal challenges, Denise has continued to shine. She has openly shared her battle with breast cancer, documenting her journey to offer support to others and provide an archive of her experiences. Moreover, Denise has dealt with the progressive loss of her sight, which has not deterred her from performing or participating in public life. Her resilience and openness have made her an inspirational figure, not just in the arts but also in advocating for diversity and inclusion.

Denise’s work as an after-dinner speaker and patron for organisations like the Music of Life Foundation and the Peter Pan Centre for Children with Special Needs highlights her dedication to using her platform for positive change. Her advocacy is rooted in her personal experiences, underscoring the importance of diversity and inclusion in all areas of life. Denise Leigh’s story is not just one of a talented soprano but of a resilient and inspiring individual who continues to make a profound impact on and off the stage.
