Dr Nii Addy is a leading educator, who currently works as the Albert E. Kent Associate Professor of Psychiatry and the Associate Professor of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at the Yale School of Medicine. Dedicating his research to substance and mood disorders, Dr Nii is an expert on the neurobiological basis of substance use, depression and anxiety. Also highly passionate about diversity and inclusion, Dr Nii is now booked as a speaker to share his expertise on neurobiology, diversity and inclusion.
Beginning his academic career back in 2002, Nii was a Graduate Fellow of Yale University and a Postdoctoral Fellow of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – having achieved a PhD in Neuroscience from Yale University. In 2010, Nii accepted the role of Assistant Professor, before being promoted to Associate Professor at the Yale School of Medicine. Alongside his work as the Albert E. Kent Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Nii is also the Director of Scientist Diversity and Inclusion and the Director of the Faculty Mentoring Programme for Minority Organisation for Recruitment and Expansion at the Yale School of Medicine.
Dr Nii also commits his time to act as the Co-Chair of the Career Development Subcommittee of the Anti-Racism Task Force – training students with diversity, equality and inclusion initiatives across campus. Nii’s research encompasses L-type calcium channel, dopaminergic and cholinergic mechanisms that mediate both substance use and mood disorders, along with the effect that flavour additives in nicotine products have on use and addiction. To spread his research far and wide, Nii works on the editorial board of Nicotine & Tobacco Research, Neuropsychopharmacology, Neuropharmacology and Biological Psychiatry. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for The Carver Project and is the host of the Addy Hour Podcast – in which he covers topics including mental health, faith, neuroscience, social justice and culture.
