Hashi Mohamed is a Somali refugee who arrived in the UK at the age of 9 and has since crafted a successful career as a London Barrister, broadcaster and author. His story is one of grit, determination and defying all odds to succeed. Hashi has gained a reputation for his anecdotal speeches and unmatched insights.

Hashi was born in Kenya to Somalian parents. Following the passing of his father in a car accident, Hashi and his siblings moved to the UK as refugees. At the age of nine with basic English, Hashi attended a struggling school in North-West London from which he managed to take control of his future and secured a place at the University of Hertfordshire where he studied Law and French. After gaining British Citizenship, he returned to Nairobi for the first time since his father’s death where he researched his identity and looked into his heritage. After graduating from Hertfordshire University and spending some time as a broadcast journalist at the BBC, Hashi was granted a scholarship to complete a Master’s Degree at the University of Oxford.

Currently, Hashi is a self-employed lawyer at No5 Barrister’s Chambers where he specialises in planning and environment law. He has been at No5 since 2012 and has been recognised consistently as one of the highest-rated junior planning barristers in England and Wales, 2019 saw Hashi acknowledged by Chambers and Partner’s Bar as an Up-and-Coming Junior for Planning in London. Outside his success as a lawyer, he is also a speaker and author. Hashi had his book ‘People Like Us’ published in 2020 which won a New Statesman Book of the Year and appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week. The book delves into the strength of family and the changes that are needed to allow underprivileged children to succeed.  He has also been featured in several newspaper publications such as The Times, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, The Observer and Prospect Magazine. His, confident speaking style and insightful takes have led Hashi to regularly present documentaries on BBC Radio 4.

Hashi Mohamed’s story is an inspirational one where he consistently succeeded in the face of adversity. He talks about topics regarding his professional career, his upbringing and the changes that need to be made to help underprivileged children. Contact Champions speakers today to book Hashi Mohamed!

“I just wanted to drop you a message to say thank you so much for helping to arrange today’s speech. Hashi was exceptional… Please can you pass thanks on to Hashi on behalf of HR and the firm. I’ve purchased his book and look forward to reading it in a few weeks time when I go on holiday!”

Megan, Simpson Thatcher & Bartlett LLP

‘’Hashi spoke with real authenticity, providing deep insight and sharing his experiences & advice which resonated with many black and minority colleagues across the business. For the senior leaders he was catalytic in encouraging us to think differently when recruiting, with his ‘’potential not polish’’ analogy’’

Andrew Richmond, Head of Marketing, Citi Private Bank EMEA

‘’HFMA booked Hashi to close one of our finance forum events in February 2021, which focused on integrated health and care between the NHS and local government. It was a great closing session for the event, with our delegates describing the session as ‘’inspiring and ‘’thought provoking’’. Hashi was effective in discussing the bigger picture of social mobility in the context of health and care, and challenging delegates to think differently about professional opportunity in today’s world’’
